Surely no one wants to intentionally use chemicals to "freshen" their air, but it does not seem to be common knowledge that those store bought concoctions with names like "Mango Island Breeze" or "Purple Haze and Cotton" are a composition of chemicals and synthetics. Even if used as one company (Glade) states "at less than 2% of a products content", they are strong! Strong enough that commonly used air freshener sprays and plug-ins cause many people ill effects with complaints ranging from headaches to breathing difficulties to nausea. This is due to their (often unlisted) ingredients that are classified by federal law as hazardous and/or toxic chemicals. Most people are not aware that these “air freshening” chemicals can cause damage to the brain, central nervous system and lungs. Apothecary Room Spray Happy with Lemongrass

Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 was a California ballot initiative (voted on by the public) that requires the governor to publish an annual list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm. The latest list includes hundreds of chemicals from Acteazolamide to zileuton. (Among the better-known entries are asbestos, benzene, lead, PCBs, and several phthalates but did you know that Aloe Vera leaf extract made the list?) Here at Park Bench Naturals, we stay abreast of what is and what is not on that list. We believe that if these chemicals are harmful in California, then, most likely, they are issues in the rest of the world as well :-/

Did you know that you can make your own all natural room sprays? They are super easy! There are recipes all over Pinterest and the internet like this one from Aromaweb: Fill a spray bottle with your choice of either 1.5 fl. ounces of distilled water and 1.5 fl. ounces of alcohol or 3 fl. ounces of distilled water. (Even though a 4 oz. bottle is suggested, leave about 1 fl. oz. unfilled so you can shake the bottle well immediately before each use.) Then, add 30-40 drops of essential oil. Essential oils can very in strength. You may want to try 20 drops at first especially if you live in a household with someone who is sensitive to strong aromas. After you first make and try the spray, let it sit for about a day before making a conclusion that the aroma is too weak; the aroma can change after the air freshener has had time to sit and the essential oils have had a chance to "marry."

We've noticed some people search for our Room Sprays using these words: Natural Room Sprays, Apothecary Sprays, Essential Oil Sprays, Chemical Free Room Sprays, Natural Room Fresheners, Natural Room Deodorizers.

"Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals that can be particularly dangerous for young children and unborn babies. Exposure to phthalates can affect testosterone levels and lead to reproductive abnormalities, including abnormal genitalia and reduced sperm production. The State of California notes that five types of phthalates -- including one that we found in air freshener products -- are 'known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm."'
